Design Considerations for a Hardworking Mudroom

A mudroom is often used to keep clutter organized, ensure a clean home and provide extra storage. However, that’s no longer the case in many homes today because it has evolved into a space that is as stylish as it is functional. With so many possibilities in terms of design, a mudroom can look attractive and welcoming for anyone entering a house.

Here are some tips to consider when designing a mudroom that combines form and function.

Add More Storage

A multi-functional mudroom has lots of storage, so be sure to make the most of it when designing the whole space. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets with shelving are ideal if you want your valuables to be out of sight to ensure the mudroom looks less cluttered. Attaching a bench to the built-in cabinetry and adding baskets help increase utility. Of course, the area should be filled with adequate lighting, from recessed cans to under-cabinet LED strips.

Pay Attention to the Flooring

Expect the mudroom to also take a beating due to prolonged use. As such, you’d want the floor to be easy-to-clean and durable. Slate or terracotta tiles not only impart an antique atmosphere to the entire space during historic restorations, but also absorb dripping water and other liquids. Meanwhile, linoleum and vinyl tiles are good choices if you want a more modern design for the mudroom.

Don’t Forget the Walls

Like the floor, the mudroom’s walls should give off a certain vibe without compromising durability. Dirt on standard drywall could be hard to remove, so choose a material that is easy to clean and has a textured surface to conceal scuffs and nicks. Beadboard paneling is one such example to consider. If you want to paint the walls to hide signs of damage, select one with a flat finish.
