FAQ
- Where are you located?
Our roots are in Wayne, PA. It's the birthplace of our business. Though our headquarters are now in Gladwyne, we still maintain a shop facility in Wayne. We normally meet clients in their homes because it makes the most sense. Our architects and engineers work from their own local offices. Our mailing address is PO Box 157, Wayne, PA 19087. Headquarters is 1230 Waverly Road in Gladwyne.
- How long have you been in business?
In 1989, Adam Sherman and Nick Walker established Cottage Industries. The original concept was to buy and renovate houses to keep or resell. We only took on clients to generate some revenue while in-between projects of our own. As time went on, we found that we had a following, of sorts. By the end of our 3rd year in business, we realized that we had something really good here, so we changed our focus entirely to serving our clients. It's been quite a few years now and we're still going strong.
- Who does the design work?
We have established partnerships with several local architects, engineers, and designers. By having more to choose from, we can closely match a client with a professional based on qualities such as personality, project style, or schedule requirements. We carefully manage the design process as a team so that what gets created is affordable to you without compromising quality of design.
- Will you build from plans I already have?
Yes, in some cases. If you have an architect you are pleased with and would like to have us build for you, give us a call and we can discuss the possibilities.
- What is your warranty?
Five years from top to bottom. More in some cases like roofing and manufacturers' warranties on fixtures or cabinets. Some exclusions exist such as damage from normal wear and tear, or limits from some manufacturers' warranties. The great thing is that to get us back for a repair takes just one phone call.
- Do you have employees?
Yes, of course we do. Your project will always be managed daily by an employee along with the attentive involvement of the owners. Most trades requiring specialized talent and skills will be performed by an associate or group that handles that specific task. We don't like the word "subcontractor" because it's comes from a business model invoking a hierarchy and runs counter to the "teamwork" based model which serves our customers best.
- How soon can you do my project?
Though there are many factors that affect a start date, the most important one is you. Unless you "need it yesterday", we can usually accommodate a reasonable schedule request. We can often begin construction within two weeks of the acquisition of a building permit.
- Do you have insurance?
Absolutely, we have all the necessary insurance, and then some. Certificates are available on request.
- Are you expensive?
We are probably the best value on the Main Line. By running our company so efficiently, we give you more for your money. You can always find a cheaper company, but do you want one? We price consistently with a well structured, proprietary estimating system. Our prices are competitive with other professional companies while bringing much greater value to our clients.
- Is my project too big for you?
Probably not, statistically speaking. We can comfortably produce 3 to 5 million dollars worth of construction at any given time. That could be made up of 2 to 6 projects. If you're looking for an $8,000,000 custom residence, we can recommend someone for you. Otherwise, call us for a meeting to discuss the details.
- Is my project too small for you?
Call us to find out. Many times people are surprised that we would be interested in just one bathroom renovation or siding and window replacements. There are so many factors we consider when planning our schedule that we weigh each potential project on its own merit.
- Can I see some of your work?
Sure, just ring us for an appointment to see what we've done in your neighborhood or to see projects similar to what you have in mind. Until then, click on the projects link above to see some photos.
- Why didn’t I use you guys on my last project?
I don't know, but we have many customers who've done multiple projects with us. A few customers have gone elsewhere after using us and have said they regretted it. We're happy to have them back.
